I actually purchased this lens to replace my 24-70 2.8, contrary to most people who normally upgrade the other way around. I was simply finding the 2.8 too large and heavy to carry around. It may not be as good as the more expensive 2.8 but it is closer than many people would admit to. It is softer at the edges wide open but to be honest at that sort of aperture the depth of field is so small most things will be out of focus anyway. Its auto focus is not fast, but whether that is important depends on the work you are doing. All the zooms in this range have distortion that will need correcting so criticising it for that is academic. A far more capable lens than the price would suggest, and around a thousand pound cheaper than its larger sibling.
