This Canon 17-40mm L series professional lens offers a useful wide angle range with a constant aperture of f4. Released over 10 years ago this is one of the oldest lenses in the Canon line up. Canon EF lenses are compatible with all Canon DSLRs, but on an APS-C sensor camera it has its focal range multiplied by 1.6 (the sensors crop factor). You might also consider the newer EF 16-35mm f4 lens which has IS image stabilisation, a slightly smaller zoom range but a higher price, currently £1098.50.

Bought (in a bout of retail therapy) to fill the shorter end of the range in my lense selection. Lovely lense to use. Full time manual focus. Weather sealed (if you use a filter). Fairly light. 77mm filters fit. Quick focusing. Covers a useful range from 40mm (gives good results on a 1.3 crop factor camera without grear distortion) down to 17mm.

I bought this lens as a replacement for the EF-S 17-85mm and Ive noticed a definite step up in terms of overall image quality; nothing earth-shattering but significant nonetheless. I like the build quality, sharpness and ease of use of this lens. Its also compact and I dont notice the weight of it at all on my 30D. I dont miss the 40-85mm focal range which I gave up by switching away from the EF-S 17-85mm either (though of course this really depends on what you like to shoot) as I just use my feet more if I need to get in closer. I can find nothing to complain about at all regarding this lens: sharpness, colour rendition, CAs and barrel distortion are all excellent/acceptable for my needs.
